French

At Penruddock, we believe that a high-quality language education fosters curiosity, broadens horizons, and deepens children’s understanding of the world. We want our pupils to be inspired by languages and cultures beyond their own, and to develop confidence in using French to communicate both orally and in writing. Our aim is to provide a strong foundation in language learning that supports future study, enhances understanding of English, and opens opportunities to learn other languages or work internationally.

Children are given opportunities to communicate in French for practical purposes and familiar topics. In Lower Key Stage 2, the focus is on developing oral skills, with written French introduced progressively in Upper Key Stage 2. Key vocabulary and skills are revisited regularly through songs, games, and interactive activities, allowing pupils to build on prior learning. Where possible, French is linked to other areas of the curriculum, enabling children to apply their language skills across different subjects.

Our approach helps pupils develop an appreciation of diversity and prepares them for life in a multicultural society. Through the experiences, knowledge, and opportunities provided, children gain confidence, tolerance, and cultural awareness. Pupils leave Penruddock equipped with the skills to continue learning French—or any other language—with enthusiasm and confidence at Key Stage 3.
