Design and Technology

At Penruddock, we believe Design and Technology inspires creativity, problem-solving, and practical skills, encouraging children to become innovative thinkers and makers. Through designing, creating, and evaluating, pupils develop confidence in their ideas and the ability to turn them into functional products. We aim to foster curiosity, resilience, and enjoyment in learning, helping children understand how the world works and how they can contribute to it.

Our curriculum allows children to explore a wide range of skills, including designing, making, and using tools and materials safely. Pupils learn about mechanisms, structures, textiles, cooking, and electronics, applying their knowledge to real-life contexts. Lessons are practical and hands-on, encouraging experimentation, collaboration, and critical thinking. Teachers model processes and vocabulary, and children are supported to evaluate and improve their work, reflecting on what works well and what could be better.

Design and Technology at Penruddock develops children’s creativity, resilience, and problem-solving skills. Children are able to articulate their design choices, explain their processes, and evaluate outcomes thoughtfully. They leave school with practical knowledge, confidence in making decisions, and the skills to tackle challenges both in school and in everyday life.

We enrich learning through practical experiences, including workshops, collaborative projects, and opportunities to test and showcase their designs. Wherever possible, we link projects to real-world contexts or local community experiences, allowing children to see the relevance of their learning and to take pride in their achievements.
