Music
Music is one of the most life-enriching subjects we teach. It is a universal language that sparks emotion, fuels creativity and brings people together. At Penruddock, we want every child to love music and to see themselves as musicians. Our curriculum aims to give pupils a vibrant, enjoyable musical experience that reflects the world they live in today, while also opening the door to musical traditions from across history.
Music plays an important role in our EYFS and KS1 classrooms. Rhyme, rhythm and song are woven through early phonics, handwriting and maths, helping children develop fine motor skills, secure early language and build confidence. Singing, movement and music-making give pupils joyful ways to embed learning and express themselves.
As children move into KS2, they take on new musical challenges. Pupils learn to play the recorder and ukulele and they also have the opportunity to learn additional instruments with specialist peripatetic teachers. Lessons introduce a wide range of musical styles and historical periods, giving children a broad and rich musical foundation.
Our music curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure clear progression of skills and knowledge from EYFS to Year 6. Teachers draw on a wide range of high-quality resources and musical repertoire to create lively, engaging lessons that are responsive to the needs and interests of each class, ensuring music is accessible for every learner.
Music has a powerful impact on our learners. For younger children, it strengthens language development, supports memory and helps them process new sounds. For older pupils, playing instruments develops coordination, concentration and resilience. Across the school, performing and making music together builds confidence, teamwork and a sense of belonging. Most importantly, music brings joy — it creates moments children remember. At Penruddock, we are proud to say: we are musicians.
Our musical life extends well beyond the classroom. Children regularly perform in assemblies, church services, carol concerts and whole-school productions. Pupils experience live theatre through our London residential, and KS2 children take part in Young Voices in Manchester — an unforgettable large-scale performance opportunity. Peripatetic teachers also inspire pupils with live demonstrations, and extra-curricular clubs give children with a particular interest or talent the chance to develop their skills further.
